How do IP, IPv4, and IPv6 differ

What is IP?

IP stands for Internet Protocol. It is a set of rules and standards that govern how data is transmitted over the internet and other networks.

IP ensures that data packets travel from the source to the destination correctly by assigning unique addresses to devices. These addresses are called IP addresses.

IP is a fundamental component of the internet, enabling devices to communicate with each other globally.

What is IPv4?

IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4) is the fourth version of the Internet Protocol and the most widely used version today.

IPv4 addresses are 32-bit numbers, typically represented in dotted decimal notation, such as 192.168.1.1.

IPv4 supports approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses. However, due to the rapid growth of the internet, IPv4 addresses are running out.

What is IPv6?

IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) is the latest version of the Internet Protocol, designed to address the limitations of IPv4.

IPv6 addresses are 128-bit numbers, typically represented in hexadecimal notation, such as 2001:00db:85a3::08a2:0037:0733.

IPv6 supports an almost unlimited number of unique addresses (2^128), ensuring ample addresses for future internet growth.

IPv6 also offers improved security features, better performance, and more efficient routing.
